Best type of wood for sauna benches.?
I have heard of a type of wood that comes from Africa that does not hold heat. Does anyone know the name of this wood? If so, have you used it and are there any pointers as to its durability?

Teak, yes its also used to build boats.
Nordic White Spruce works well
I had the job of building saunas in a very large resort in the Poconos. The plans called for redwood. The walls, benches, everything were solid redwood. It worked out fine. Now years later the saunas are still going strong, no problems.
soft wood, Fir?
Teak would be the best until you priced it out ---wow!
both redwood and cedar, like teak have naturally occurring oils
that will ensure a long life in such a demanding environment.
With the redwood and cedar plan on spending the extra $$ for "clear"
boards -- free of knots -- it i"ll be easier on the bottom.
PPMH: You should ask your wife this.... :) Just don't use pine - we don't want sap all over our cute little tushies....
As mentioned, Teak or redwood are the best but you might also try man-made wood! This product is made from recycled plastic and is great in saunas!
My sauna is made from Western Red Cedar, and it is perfect.
